In the beautiful region of Bocas del Toro, a silent tragedy is unfolding.
Sloths, howler monkeys, white-faced Capuchin monkeys, and other canopy-dwelling wildlife are being continuously electrocuted by exposed electrical infrastructure across the islands. This heartbreaking reality persists despite Panama's environmental laws protecting wildlife and their habitats.

The approved Environmental Impact Assessment (EsIA) and Environmental Management Plan (PMA) include measures designed to reduce these impacts, including installing the electrical system underground or, where overhead lines remain, using insulated conductors, as well as installing wildlife bridges (wildlife crossings) However, many of these measures have not been implemented or maintained.

The failure to implement and enforce these environmental measures threatens this invaluable biodiversity and also the local economy, which depends heavily on Eco-tourism.

Over the past two years, community members have documented dozens of wildlife electrocutions and dog attacks involving displaced wildlife. However, many experts believe the true number is significantly higher because numerous incidents are never reported.

While the natural beauty of Bocas del Toro continues to captivate everyone who visits, the fate of its wildlife demands immediate attention and action.  We demand an end to the electrocution of wildlife and compliance with environmental laws in Bocas del Toro and are funding a legal battle to ensure Bocas del Toro Wildlife and habitat are protected by demanding compliance through the courts.
